Nattokinase, is a protease (an enzyme that assists in protein digestion) found in Natto, a fermented Japanese food made from fermented soybeans.  Revered for centuries as a medicinal food, it was only until the 1980's that nattokinase was identified as its main functional ingredient for fibrin degradation.  Fibrin, a protein, is the main constituent in blood clots that can occur in heart attacks, pulmonary embolism, or strokes.

Serrapeptase is a protease also known for its fibrinolytic activity.  Derived from an enterobacteria called Serratia E15 found in the intestine of silkworms, it has been used in Japan and Europe for over four decades for its anti-inflammatory activity.
