Energy Drink

Buyer's Guide

By Selene Yeager

In 1965, Florida exercise scientists squeezed sweat
into a test tube, analyzed it
and revealed what anyone
whose eyes have been stung
by perspiration knows:
Sweat's briny blend of
minerals include sodium
and potassium.  Then they invented Gatorade,
a carbohydrate-and electrolyte-infused drink
that helped the Gators win
the '65 Orange Bowl-and
began a hydration revolution.

Recent research shows
drinking a sports beverage
instead of water can help
cyclists last almost twice as
long in endurance tests.
   Any energy drink-a
beverage with 4% to 8%
carbohydrate-can help you
perform better.  But because
we love raw data, we
enlisted a panel of test
riders-serious recreational
riders and racers-to tell us
which of these 11 leading
sports beverages is best.
(Each drink was rated by
at least three testers.)
Because we're also easily
bored, we asked bartenders
at Moab's Slickrock Cafe
in Utah to turn them into
tasty mixed drinks.
(The barkeeps didn't
contribute to the overall
ratings.)  Ratings are based
upon performance,
palatability and ease of use.

ENERGY DRINK OR RECOVERY DRINK?

The main difference between energy and recovery drinks is the relative amount of protein and carbohydrate in each.

Energy drinks provide on-the-bike carbohydrate to refuel working muscles while you're hydrating; for optimum performance, 8 ounces of energy drink should have about 40 to 80 calories of carbohydrate.  (Check the label.)  Some also contain amounts of protein, which helps your muscles recover.

Recovery drinks, such as EnduroxR4 and smartFUEL bioFIX, contain a larger amount of protein-sports nutrition experts recommend 1 gram of protein for every 3 to 5 grams of carbohydrate-to help your body replenish glycogen immediately after a challenging ride.
